Monterey, and Pinnacles National Monument

We took advantage of PK having a conference in the coastal town of Monterey (a few hours south of SF) to go down for a visit. The weather was sunny and gorgeous as we strolled along the ocean, flanked on one side by a stunning carpet of wildflowers, and on the other by the rocky coast of Monterey Bay.

It happened to be seal pupping season, so the rocks were strewn with baby seals, looking like overstuffed kielbasa sausages with flippers. They were incredibly cute as they alternately flopped around in the shallow water, or nestled on the beach next to their napping mothers.
After the conference we drove to Pinnacles National Monument, a rocky ridgeline that rises out of the Central Valley a few hours southeast of SF. The climate got much hotter and drier as we drove inland from the coast: over 80 degrees in Pinnacles, about 15 degrees hotter than in Monterey. We enjoyed a 4-hour hike along the top of the ridge, with beautiful rock formations, great views in all directions, and condors making lazy circles on the updrafts in the valley below us.
